Council District 50
James S. Oddo, Republican, Independence, Conservative, Right To Life
Party Enrolled In: Republican
Occupation: Member of the New York City Council
Occupational Background: Legal Counsel to Thomas V. Ognibene, Minority Leader of
the City Council of New York; Chief of Staff to former Council Member John A. Fusco
Educational Background: J.D., New York Law School; B.A., Fordham University
Organizational Affiliations:(Not supplied.)
Prior Public Experience: In the City Council since February 1999.
Jim Oddo was able to hit the ground running from the day of his
election into office on February 16, 1999, having served in the City Council for 7 prior
years as Legal Counsel to the City Council Minority Leader Thomas V. Ognibene and Chief of
Staff to former Council Member John A. Fusco.
His knowledge of the “players and the process” has allowed
Councilman Oddo to achieve great victories for his community in an incredibly short time.
With their familiarity with city agencies, he and his staff have been able to continue to
provide the stellar constituent service that has been the hallmark of the 50th District
since 1992. His productive working relationship with Speaker Vallone and Council
leadership is evidenced by his ability to secure millions of dollars in capital projects,
including one million dollars in initiatives for schools in his district, in this, his
first budget.
It is that relationship, along with his close ties to Mayor Rudolph
Giuliani and his staff that has allowed Councilman Oddo to effectively address the
critical issues of his district. Whether it’s de-mapping the Richmondtown Loop;
rehabilitating the Bay 8th Street and Dyker Beach Parks; reconstructing Father Capodanno
Boulevard; closing illegal housing in Midland Beach; addressing flooding problems along
Bay 20th Street or 83rd Street; creating new ball fields at Farm Colony; transforming
“The Shelter” into senior housing; crafting legislation to protect kids from
pornography on the Internet at our public libraries and mandating parental consent before
minors can have their bodies pierced; or leading the fight for Automatic External
defibrillators in New York City to address the tragically low cardiac survival rates, Jim
Oddo has worked literally day and night for his community.
With hard work and commitment comes results. Jim Oddo has proven that.
His combination of vast experience of city government and a youthful enthusiasm for the
job is unique and should earn him an opportunity to continue to serve the people of the
50th District.
