Education is my top priority. As a graduate of our public schools (Stuyvesant and P.S. 6), a former CUNY Professor, and a parent, I know the importance of our schools and their accomplishments and failings. Parents are forced to play public school lottery; some find excellent schools, others cannot.

We must do better.

Demand Accountability: Students must be held to a set of high, core standards and schools must see that they meet them.

Innovate: We must stand up to a bureaucracy that too often stifles teacher creativity and gets in the way of student learning.

Invest: We must invest in a well-educated workforce by reducing class size and putting more computers in our schools.

In 1997, I helped lead the local fight to preserve our rent protection laws. Next year, when the City Council will vote again on these laws, I will fight to keep rent protection strong. Today I am at the forefront of the efforts to build a Second Avenue subway to relieve the East Side transportation crisis. As a Councilmember, I will continue to work on that and other critical local issues: protecting parks, reducing noise pollution from car alarms and rowdy bars, increasing public safety, and insisting on community input on major development decisions. And to keep the City’s economy growing, I will work to reform tax policies that hurt small businesses and hamper job creation.

Two years ago, I ran a strong issue-oriented campaign for City Council, energized by scores of volunteers, and won the endorsement of The New York Times. In this election, I’m proud to be endorsed by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Comptroller Alan Hevesi, Public Advocate Mark Green, Borough President Virginia Fields, and Assemblymembers Steven Sanders and Pete Grannis. On November 2, I hope I’ll have your support too.
