All Special Elections and the Presidential Primary have been postponed to June 23 due to ongoing community spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). This Voter Guide will be updated by early June with information on all June 23 elections. Visit our Voting and Coronavirus page for the latest updates.

 

The office of New York City’s Queens borough president was vacated when former Queens Borough President Melinda Katz was sworn into the office of Queens district attorney. On January 2nd, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a special election for March 24th to fill the vacated seat. The elected candidate will fill the seat through the end of 2020. Later this year, a primary (in June) and general election (in November) will be held to fill the seat from January 2021 through the end of 2021. On March 15, all voting in the Special Election for Queens Borough President was suspended by Mayor Bill de Blasio, in response to COVID-19. On March 30, Governor Cuomo rescheduled the election for June 23, simultaneous with the previously planned statewide primary.

All registered voters in Queens are eligible to vote in this special election. Check the New York City BOE’s website to make sure you’re registered to vote and look up your early voting and election day poll site.

THE OFFICE OF BOROUGH PRESIDENT

 

 

Borough Presidents are the advocates for their boroughs. While borough presidents can’t create or pass laws, they can fund organizations in their boroughs (about $4 million of the city budget is set aside for this purpose); make land use decisions; appoint members of local Community Boards and the City Planning Commission, who advise on land and neighborhood needs; and advocate for residents of their boroughs.
